Relational PALS Mentors | Youth Outreach

PALS Mentors

PALS are groups of adults who surround and support a teacher and his/her class. Activities include monthly field trips with a shared meal, service projects and encouragement.

Mentoring. While the field trips and shared meals are valuable, the true aim of program is mentoring. This relationship is intended to benefit both the student and mentor by enriching their understanding of each other’s life experiences. The adult PALS gain an awareness of the culture of the poverty and the needs of inner city children while understanding the huge potential and capacity these students have to achieve and be successful. In turn, the students learn from the different experience of the mentor and are better able to imagine life outside of their neighborhood.

Networking for Education. An important aspect of the STEPdc model is to bring together those with resources and those with great need. Nowhere is this more important than in our schools. Classroom partnerships can be as simple as being pen pals to give children a chance to practice writing; or as ambitious as arranging workplace visits that might enhance a class lesson. PALS participate in school life as science fair judges, career day presenters and classroom speakers.
