STEPTutoring
Tutoring at Bruce Monroe @ ParkView Elementary school meets the first three Thursdays
of each month during the school year. The program begins with a simple,
nutritious dinner at 6PM, and ends at 8PM after a character lesson.
STEPdc depends on partners including local churches and other volunteers,
to provide dinner at the start of each session. Click
here for more information
about providing a meal for STEPTutoring.
Our tutoring curriculum focuses on critical thinking, reading, vocabulary
development, writing and reading comprehension skills. Our belief is
that focusing on these skills increases the student’s ability to
perform well both in the classroom and on standardized tests. Developing
these skills builds common sense and helps students make informed choices
that affect every aspect of their lives. Ultimately, the program provides
children with a mentor and educator who encourages them to enjoy learning
and realize their full academic potential.
An
important part of our tutoring program is an ongoing discussion of character
values. Students read age appropriate books highlighting positive
character traits and watch a presentation each evening that reinforces
the lesson with stories of Bible figures. The goal is to teach morals
and help students distinguish between beneficial and harmful behavior.
The focus of the lessons is on making good choices and understanding
the consequences that these choices have on the students and those around
them. Our expectation is that they will be more likely to make positive
life choices and avoid negative behavior.
